Widgenomics June 24, 2007

Crafty developers are spending 24×7 to come up with widgets that will show up on Facebook’s recently popular list. But once you’re there, now what? Lack of bandwidth to handle traffic, and oh yeah, how do you make any money to pay for more server power? Don Dodd examines the conundrum really well and Brad Feld chides Facebook a bit for not giving an obvious revenue stream to the little-guy-widget-developers. It’s pretty clear that the Facebook platform is the first major site to open up their platform (not just api) and now there will be a flood of open platforms for any wiki, social network, web2.0, (blah blah blah) type of site. It will be interesting to see what revenue models work beyond just the obvious contextual advertising.
